Timber Care

Care & Maintenance Guide.

With proper care and regular maintenance, your Macrocarpa furniture will retain its natural beauty and provide many years of enjoyment.

Ongoing Care

Recoat your furniture every September/October (spring), or sooner if it shows signs of drying out or fading.
Horizontal surfaces — table tops, seat tops, armrests — are most exposed and may require more frequent maintenance.
Clean surfaces regularly to prevent buildup of dirt, mould, or mildew.
Avoid leaving water pooled on surfaces for extended periods.

Recoating Process

Follow these steps to maintain the finish and longevity of your furniture.

1

Choose the Right Oil

Use a high-quality exterior timber oil from a reputable supplier.

2

Clean Thoroughly

Remove dust, grime, moss, or contaminants by scrubbing with sugar soap or a mild household detergent.

3

Rinse & Dry

Wash all surfaces with clean water and allow the furniture to dry completely.

4

Light Sanding

Lightly sand using a cork sanding block with 180-grit sandpaper, always sanding in the direction of the wood grain.

5

Remove Residue

Wipe down with a soft cloth or vacuum to remove all sanding dust.

6

Apply Oil

Apply a thin, even coat using a brush — a speed brush or standard paint brush both work well.

7

Wipe Excess Oil

As the oil begins to dry, wipe off any excess with a clean, soft cloth. Drying time varies by temperature and product — follow the manufacturer's instructions.

8

Second Coat

Do not sand between coats. Simply wipe clean and apply a second thin coat if required.

Timber Movement, Grain & Cracks — What to Expect

Many customers ask whether the grain will open up or if cracks will develop over time — the short answer is yes, and this is completely normal with natural timber. Macrocarpa is a solid, natural wood and it responds to changes in temperature and moisture. As the timber dries and adjusts to outdoor conditions, you may notice surface cracks (also called checking) and the grain becoming more visible or opening slightly. These changes are purely cosmetic and do not affect the strength or durability of the furniture. In some cases, cracks may open and close with the seasons — especially between dry summers and wetter winters. Regular oiling helps slow down moisture movement, reducing the extent of cracking and keeping the timber stable. Over time, the timber will settle into its environment and movement will become less noticeable.

This natural character is part of what gives Macrocarpa its unique, rustic appearance.

Additional Tips for Longevity

Placement Matters: Where possible, position furniture under cover or use outdoor furniture covers to reduce exposure to sun and rain.
Seasonal Storage: During extreme weather or long periods of non-use, store furniture in a dry, sheltered area.
Hardware Check: Periodically check and tighten any bolts, screws, or fittings.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Do not use strong solvents, bleach, or pressure washers, as these can damage the timber and finish.

Important Safety Note

Always dispose of oil-soaked rags safely, as they may be prone to spontaneous combustion. Follow the oil manufacturer's safety guidelines.
